About Thunder Active Exhaust System

It is a system that adds the missing "spice" to the exhaust sound of modern cars. Due to turbines, particulate filters and eco-standards, the sound of even powerful engines has become quiet and "synthetic" (turbine whistling is audible). Thunder simulates a deep, full-bodied rumble of a naturally aspirated petrol V6 or V8, making the car sound the way a sports car should.

Manufacturers are forced to reduce engine displacement, decrease the number of cylinders, use turbochargers and particulate filters to meet stringent environmental requirements. Even after removing filters and installing a straight-through system, the turbine sound (air whistling) will still dominate, reminiscent of a vacuum cleaner rather than an engine roar.

The active exhaust system was originally factory-installed on top-end diesel Audi Q7 from 2013. Currently it is available as an option for premium models from Porsche, Maserati, Mercedes and BMW (X5, X7). The sole supplier of these systems for all brands is Eberspaecher. Thunder uses the same technology.

Yes, the system is also useful for such cars. Firstly, it complies with EU directives from July 1, 2019, requiring electric vehicles to produce sound when moving up to 20 km/h for pedestrian safety. Secondly, it's about emotions: many EV owners, after the silence, want to occasionally experience a sporty sound during acceleration. The sound is generated artificially and is completely safe for the car's electrical system.

The Thunder active exhaust system operates across the entire engine RPM range, unlike the factory Audi Q7 system where the sound cuts off after 2000 RPM. This provides full sound accompaniment — from a soft purr at idle to a loud roar at high RPMs.

No, the Thunder system does not interfere with the design of the stock exhaust at all. Sound generators are installed next to the exhaust pipes and simulate sound without affecting the operation of the engine, catalytic converters or particulate filters. This is a completely reversible modification.

In most cases, for proper installation of generators in the cavities behind the rear bumper, removal is required. This provides access to the installation location and allows secure mounting of the generators. However, depending on the car model, alternative mounting options with sound tube outlets may require a different approach.

For the system to operate, 12V power connection (positive and negative) to the vehicle network is required. Two more wires connect to the car's CAN bus (CAN-High and CAN-Low) to read engine RPM. Connection points are individual for each model, but power is often taken from the cigarette lighter socket in the trunk, and the CAN bus can be found in the fuse box.

Yes, it is possible if the sound generator physically cannot be installed outside due to lack of space. In such case, the outlet trumpets must definitely be directed outside, and their sound should not be blocked by anything.

Thunder generators have a waterproof housing and professional speakers protected from the environment. The main rule of installation is not to mount the generator with the bell facing upward. It should be positioned horizontally or tilted downward to prevent water from entering and dirt from accumulating, which could block the sound.

The system is supplied as a universal kit. It includes: one or two sound generators (depending on configuration), electronic control units, wiring for power and CAN bus connection, cables for connecting the units to generators, and instructions. Mounting hardware and clamps may be needed additionally, depending on the installation location.

Sound Control and Configuration

The app is called dbplus. It is completely free and available for download from the official App Store for Apple devices. For devices running Android OS, we will send the app electronically after purchasing the kit.

After connecting via Bluetooth, click the "i" icon in the top right corner of the app. In the menu that opens, select your car's make, model, and year of manufacture, then click the Download button at the bottom. Individual parameters will be downloaded to the electronic control unit to optimize system operation. If the server is busy, try again later.

The program allows very fine-tuning of various V6/V8 petrol engine sounds, and then you can save your settings and use them as presets.

The parameter with the red slider in the app controls the sound behavior when starting the engine. In the lower position, the sound RPM will remain at idle level. In the upper position, the sound simulates starting a sports car — first a short-term rise (surge) in RPM, then a return to idle.

Yes, the exhaust sound volume is smoothly adjustable. The app has a special "B" button that muffles the sound down to complete zero. This is convenient to avoid disturbing neighbors at night or during long quiet city drives.

All settings (selected sound, volume, startup behavior) can be saved as 4 individual configurations. You can quickly switch between them depending on your mood or situation.

The car always starts with the sound parameters that were active at the moment the engine was turned off. If you want the car to start without sound, you need to create a separate configuration with zero volume (activate the "B" button) and leave it active before turning off the ignition.

Comparison and Benefits

1. Cost: Thunder is significantly cheaper than a full sports exhaust system.
2. Comfort: with aftermarket exhaust, headaches and fatigue from the drone on long trips are inevitable. Thunder volume can be adjusted or turned off.
3. Reversibility: Thunder can be easily removed and sold/installed on another car, unlike "welded-in" tuning.
4. Effect: Thunder provides that true "soulful" naturally aspirated V8 sound that is hard to achieve from a turbo engine.

The main difference is in component quality and reliability. Thunder, like the factory Eberspächer system, uses professional speakers in sound generators. THOR and iXsound use ordinary consumer-grade speakers with paper diffusers. They are not durable, afraid of temperature changes and moisture, their contacts corrode quickly, and the system fails after 2-3 years.

Firstly, due to professional speakers designed for harsh operating conditions. Secondly, the Thunder generator housing is disassemblable and repairable, unlike the welded housings of THOR. Thirdly, the design is well thought out for protection against the environment.

Yes. The factory system on the Audi Q7 turns off after 2000 RPM, and owners cannot choose different sounds — only on/off. Thunder operates across the entire RPM range and offers 8 different sounds with fine-tuning capabilities, making it a more flexible and interesting solution.

Technical Details and Maintenance

Inside the Thunder sound generator, a professional speaker is installed, similar to those used in factory Eberspaecher systems. This ensures sound clarity, power, and resistance to environmental influences, unlike competitors' paper speakers.

Yes, this is an important technical advantage. Unlike THOR systems, the Thunder generator housing is disassemblable. This allows diagnostics and repairs if necessary, replacing a failed component rather than throwing away the entire generator.

With proper installation (protection from direct water and dirt ingress) and use of quality components, the system lasts for many years. Professional speakers are less susceptible to damage from vibration and temperature changes than household equivalents. The exact service life depends on operating conditions, but it is significantly higher than competitors.

The system is powered by the 12V vehicle network, but power consumption is minimal as modern amplifiers and speakers are used. It does not place a noticeable load on the car's battery or alternator.

No. Thunder connects to the CAN bus only to read engine RPM readings (read-only mode). The system does not send any signals back to the CAN bus, so it is completely safe for the factory electronics and does not cause errors.

Legal Matters and Warranty

In most countries, installing Thunder is legal because the system does not modify the car's structure and does not increase the actual noise level from exhaust gases. It only simulates sound inside and outside the car. However, we recommend checking local traffic rules and noise level requirements.

Generally, no. During technical inspection, the noise level of the stock exhaust and engine operation are checked. Thunder does not affect these parameters. Moreover, the system can be easily turned off via the app during the inspection.

First, check the power connection and the integrity of the fuses. If the problem is not there, contact the installer or us via the contacts on the website. Thanks to the disassemblable design of the generators, we can offer repair rather than just replacing the unit.

Yes, a warranty is provided on all Thunder system components. The warranty period and terms should be clarified with official dealers or in the documentation included with the kit. The warranty covers manufacturing defects but not damage caused by improper installation.

The sound of the Thunder system simulates the operation of a powerful engine, which technically is not a violation if the volume level does not exceed permissible norms (these are regulated, and Thunder allows you to make the sound quieter). However, the driver should be prepared to explain that it is an electronic simulation that does not affect the car's structure. It is recommended to use the system reasonably, especially within city limits.
